Mapping the Trails
This spring (2011) we set out on a project to walk all the trails on Presque Isle State Park. Using an iPhone 4 and the app, MotionX-GPS ($.99 or try the free version, MotionX-GPS Lite), we recorded the GPS coordinates on all the trails in the park. What did we find? Well, some of the trails have changed over time and don't exactly match the official trail map. (Note: We discussed this with the park management and they said a revise of the official trail map was scheduled for the 2012 version.)
But we wanted to offer you a chance to see the trails as we experienced them. We understand that most of the trails on the park have two trailheads -- and hikers might not start on the same one as we did. Below, you will find the following information collected during our hikes: start/stop coordinates, photos of the trailheads, time it took for us to complete the hike along with a link to the map plotted on a Google map. Finally, there is a .gpx file, which contains all the data collected during our walk. This file can be downloaded and opened using a number of programs including Google Earth.
