Turtles on Lagoon Log

Some of you have asked how the Turtle Platform is coming.  Well, with this great weather things, are now beginning to move along.  As  you know, the foundation and supports were installed last fall.  The problem with water in the support holes was solved, and the concrete poured.  As you can see from the photographs taken on March 14, the area is ready for the deck and walkway to be built.

Over the last few weeks, The Presque Isle Partnership, GE volunteers, and DCNR have been reviewing the final plans and scheduling the work.  As of today, all material for the project has been ordered and should be delivered shortly.  The review made some minor changes to the project; however, each improved upon the original plans.  As I write this, steel mounting plates are being made and drilled.

The project will be underway in full force by mid-April.  PIP has contacted Tower Optical to arrange for the installation of the viewing scopes that will be part of the platform.  The turtles were out on the log on Sunday.  DCNR has a huge new log ready to be floated into the area to draw even more turtles.  As you can see from the picture below, the turtles usually have company on the log.

The first order of business will be to build the wood platform base.  Once that is done, DCNR will drill holes and install the anchor bolts needed.  As soon as this is done, the deck, ramps, rails and walkway will be built.  While this is in progress, the viewing scope installation will take place.  The information plaque is done and will be put into place when the rest of the work is complete.

Opening date?  Everyone involved is shooting for Memorial Day.  Here hoping they can make it.  I will keep you poste   In a week or so, I will have a blog and pictures about the various turtles you might see on Presque Isle.    Hope you enjoy the nice warm weekend that looks like is coming our way.  Until then. see you on the park!!
